Year 5

Following on from last term’s World War Two topic, we will be learning about spies and espionage in Spring 2 . We will be linking this to local history by focusing on a spy ring that existed at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich in the 1930s. Alongside learning about these events in History and Geography, children will be writing a cross-curricular newspaper report. Later in the term, we will also be developing our understanding of how writers use dialogue in stories to develop character and move the action forwards. Children will also learn about some famous spies from history, including Alan Turing. We will learn more about codes and code breaking, try making our own codes and even have a go at writing secret messages in invisible ink!

In Maths, we will begin the term with a recap of area and perimeter which we covered last term. We will then be moving on to learn about volume, factors, multiples and prime numbers. In the last two weeks of term, we will be focusing on statistics.

Our learning in Science focuses on properties of materials, particularly changes of state. There will be lots of practical activities—please check the blog regularly to see what we have been doing.

In RE, children will be focusing on the Christian faith, learning more about Jesus and what Christians believe about him and his life.

In PD, our topic is ‘Healthy Me’. Children will be discussing different lifestyle choices that some adults make, including drinking alcohol and smoking, and will learn about developing a strong sense of self and a positive body image.
