Year 3

In English we will explore non-fiction texts including recipes and instructions to learn about the process of preparing food. We will write a fictional story based on our class novel ‘The Tale of Despereaux’. We will also use role play to better understand how a character thinks and feels and write a recipe based on the text ‘How to cook a Rainbow’.

In Mathematics, we will consolidate all times tables learnt this year (3, 4, 6, 8 and 12) and division facts. We will compare and order non-unit fractions and find fractions of amounts and read the time on analogue (including Roman numerals) and digital clocks (including 24hr) using phrases: ‘half past’, ‘quarter past’ and ‘quarter to’ We will name the properties of 2D shapes and measure their perimeter and create 3D shapes and identify their properties.

In Science, we will learn the names of different bones in the human skeleton and label these on a diagram. We will sort animal skeletons into categories and discuss different types of skeletons and explain how bones and muscles work to create movement. We will organise foods into food groups and consider the nutrients that different foods provide. 

In Geography we will look at the local area and share experiences about living locally to Plumstead and categorise the features of our local area into human or physical. We will explore a variety of maps and photographs to describe how our school has changed over time and make comparisons between features of the local area in the past and present. We will also compare farming methods of small farms and mega farms. 

In Art, we will explore Ancient Egyptian art and create paper using ancient techniques. We will draw and cut simple stencils to create a repeating pattern. We will also design, make and evaluate an Egyptian scroll.

In PE, we will learn to use a badminton racket to strike a shuttlecock and practise forehand and backhand strikes. We will continue with rounders and improve our throwing catching and striking techniques.

This term in Spanish, we will learn new vocabulary related to body parts and listen to conversations related to a doctors visit. We will practise asking and responding to questions. This term, also have an exciting Spanish themed day of learning planned!
